Silk Scarves FAQ — L'Officiel Roma

Frequently asked questions about L'Officiel Roma silk scarves and stoles, made in Como and designed by Laura Fabbri. See also the general FAQ.

What is the difference between a foulard and a scarf?
Both terms are correct. A foulard is the square format, such as the 90x90 cm carré or the 70x70 cm; a scarf is the long format, such as 70x180 or 70x190 cm. Stoles are wide scarves to wrap around the shoulders.

What silk do you use?
Pure 14 momme silk, made in Como, Italy's silk district. The Laura Fabbri 90x90 foulards are in silk twill. The exception is the lightweight silk line (70x70 format), which has a lower weight.

What does 14 momme mean?
Momme is the unit used to measure the weight of silk: the higher it is, the denser and more substantial the fabric. A 14 momme silk has a good hand, an elegant drape and lasts longer than lighter silks.

What is through-printing?
It is a printing method in which the colour passes right through the fabric: the reverse of the scarf looks almost identical to the front, so it still looks beautiful when the back shows as you tie it.

How are the edges finished?
With a hand and machine finish: the corners are hand-rolled and the rest of the edge is machine-finished.

Which sizes and prices are available?
Lightweight silk foulards 70x70 cm (€24); pure silk 90x90 cm carrés, Laura Fabbri and L'Officiel Silk (€95-100); pure silk scarves 70x180 cm (€96) and 70x190 cm (€95-96); pure silk stoles (€82) and modal and silk stoles (€58). See the foulards and scarves collections.

Why do they cost less than designer silk carrés?
Silk carrés from the big fashion houses often cost €300-500 or more. L'Officiel Roma offers 14 momme Como silk with through-printing at around €95 because it does not carry the costs of large advertising campaigns, celebrity endorsements and flagship stores. See Our philosophy.

How do you wear a 90x90 foulard?
Knotted around the neck, folded into a triangle over the shoulders, as a headband or turban, tied to a bag handle or used as a belt. The long format is worn wrapped around the neck or over the shoulders like a light stole.

How do you wash a silk scarf?
By hand in cold water with a mild detergent, or dry-clean. Do not wring: blot with a towel and dry flat, away from heat and direct sunlight. Iron on a low setting on the reverse.

Who is Laura Fabbri?
She is L'Officiel Roma's in-house designer, who creates the exclusive prints of the silk collections.
