How to Add a Silk Sleep Amenity to a Hotel or Spa: A Practical Guide

Sleep has become one of the main reasons guests choose a hotel or a spa. Many properties now sell sleep programmes, pillow menus and evening rituals. A mulberry silk pillowcase and sleep mask are a simple way to make that promise tangible: the guest feels the difference on the first night and can take it home. This guide explains how to offer them, what to check before buying, and how to avoid the most common mistakes. It is written by L'Officiel Roma, an Italian atelier founded in Naples in 1969 and now based in Rome, which supplies the Laura Fabbri silk sleep collection to hotels, spas and perfumeries.

Why silk works as a sleep amenity

  • Visible benefit. The smooth surface of mulberry silk reduces friction on hair and sleep creases on the face. Guests notice it in the morning, which makes it easy to explain and easy to sell.
  • Fits the wellness story. A silk pillowcase and eye mask continue the work of a facial, a hair treatment or a sleep massage at home.
  • Extra revenue. Unlike room linen, the set is a product the guest pays for or receives as part of a paid package.

Three ways to offer it

  1. Inside a sleep programme or wellness retreat. Add a pillowcase and sleep mask set to the welcome or sleep kit. The cost is built into the package price.
  2. As a paid in-room amenity. Place the boxed set in suites or on request at turndown, with a small card showing the price. Guests who like it take it home and the amount goes on the room bill.
  3. In the spa boutique. Display the set next to facial and hair care products. Therapists can mention it after a treatment, when the guest is most receptive.

Silk, satin or cotton sateen?

Mulberry silk Polyester satin Cotton sateen
Fibre Natural protein fibre Synthetic Natural plant fibre
Feel and friction Very smooth, low friction Smooth, less breathable Soft, more friction on hair
Perceived value for guests High, a recognised beauty product Low, seen as an imitation Standard hotel linen
Laundry Delicate wash only Machine wash Industrial laundry
Best use Guest amenity, spa retail, sleep kits Budget giveaways Standard room linen

For a luxury property the choice is mulberry silk: satin looks similar in photos but guests recognise the difference when they touch it.

What to check before choosing a supplier

  • Momme weight. Momme measures silk weight. Many pillowcases on the market are 16 to 19 momme; 22 momme is denser, more opaque and lasts longer.
  • Silk grade. Grade 6A is the highest for fibre length and evenness.
  • Certification. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 means the fabric is tested for harmful substances, important for a product in contact with face and hair.
  • Colours and size. Neutral tones such as white, gold and beige match most luxury interiors. A 50×80 cm envelope pillowcase fits standard European pillows.
  • Samples and minimums. Ask for a sample set and check the minimum order before committing.

The laundry question

Silk needs a delicate wash at a maximum of 30 °C with a neutral detergent, no bleach and no softener. It is not suited to industrial hotel laundry cycles. That is why the most successful formats treat the silk set as a personal guest item to gift or sell, rather than as linen that goes back to the laundry. If you use silk pillowcases in suites, launder them separately on a delicate cycle and include a care card for guests who buy them.

Launch checklist

  1. Order a sample set and test it in one suite or in the spa.
  2. Choose the format: sleep kit, paid amenity or spa retail.
  3. Pick one or two colours that match your interiors.
  4. Set the guest price and prepare a small card with price and care instructions.
  5. Brief reception, housekeeping and spa therapists in two sentences: what it is and why it helps sleep, hair and skin.
  6. Order a first batch at least one month before the season opening or programme launch.
