Is moissanite a fake diamond?
Short answer: no. Moissanite is not a diamond imitation or glass: it is a gemstone in its own right, with its own composition and properties. It exists in nature (Henri Moissan identified it in 1893 in a meteorite), but it is so rare that jewelry moissanite is created in a laboratory with the same structure as the natural mineral.
It is also different from cubic zirconia, which is much softer (about 8 Mohs) and tends to cloud and scratch with wear. Read more in our moissanite bridal guide.
